Spring is already here, and homeowners all around the globe are (at least) thinking about doing a spot of spring cleaning.

In some households, spring cleaning is a yearly ritual that can never be missed. For others, the idea of thoroughly decluttering the house can seem like a responsibility that’s too overwhelming and time-consuming.

No matter which time of year, the best way to declutter your home is to pack up all of your previous season essentials and move them out of the way and into a storage unit.

Planning ahead can help expedite the process. So, to help you out, here are some ideas for using your storage unit for spring cleaning.

1.  Embrace spring cleaning days

First things first: You want to schedule specific times when you are going to concentrate on your spring cleaning duties. Make an overall timeline for when you want the whole project to be completed, and then work towards smaller goals and targets.

As the weather will be getting more and more tempting, schedule the days you will clean and break it up into a couple of separate days within the month.

Create a list of necessary tasks to keep yourself both organized and on track. If you live with other people, divide the tasks among everyone.

Once you know what tasks need to be completed, you can then ensure you have all the necessary products and tools to carry them out. This may mean buying a few high-quality gadgets or just running to your local store for more detergent!

Last but not least, during these spring cleaning days, keep in mind that the overall goal is to declutter your home. When cleaning, if you come across any items that are unnecessarily taking up space or need to be thrown out — remove them immediately!

2.  Gather up your winter items

Once the Spring Cleaning days are over, it is time to focus on what needs to be moved to your storage unit. The most obvious items will be your winter items, such as holiday decorations and other large gear or pieces that are only used during these months.

When gathering up these items, categorize them into groups that need to be sold, donated or thrown away and those that will be moved to your storage unit.

Further, categorize those going into your storage unit by size and which room they belong in. By spending a little more time on organization now, you will save yourself a lot of energy and stress when winter rolls around again and you want to find something!

You can also use this as an opportunity to switch out your home decor and prepare it for spring. For example, if you had thicker rugs laid down over the colder months, you can move them into your storage unit and replace them with something more spring-appropriate.

Whatever you do, prior to packing up your winter tools and equipment, ensure they are suitably cleaned and dried as moisture can create rusting — potentially ruining them over time.

3. Organize your seasonal closet

Next, it is time to focus on your wardrobe. Having a seasonal clothing swap out will enable you to declutter and free-up space for the outfits you want to be wearing in the upcoming months.

Just like when going through your winter gear, categorize pieces into those that need to be put into storage, those that need repairing or professional washing, and those that can be donated. If you do have pieces that need mending or professional cleaning, they should be done before storing, so they are ready for next winter season.

Keep in mind that, if left untreated, dirt and oils from deodorant or perfumes can cause fabrics to deteriorate or discolor.

When packing up your winter clothes, opt to store them in vacuum-sealed bags to save as much space as possible in your mobile storage solution.

Depending on where you live, you want to make sure that you still have some transitional clothing (such as light sweaters) for when the milder conditions return.

4. Swap the winter items for the spring stuff

Once all the winter stuff is prepared and sorted, it is time to do the same for your spring items that are (potentially) already in storage.

While it will differ for every household, items such as landscaping equipment (although you should instead consider hiring  landscape contractors), patio furniture and appliances, and summer sports equipment are good ones to reintroduce to the household.

If you have larger items such as a boat, or just an abundance of heavy furniture, think about hiring professional packers and movers to do the heavy-lifting.

Bring out the warm weather goods, carefully pack the winter ones, and you are ready for the new season!
